History of Waukesha
Waukesha, translated to mean "By The Little Fox", gained world notability as a great and prosperous resort area during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The entire tourist boom experienced can be traced to Colonel Richard Dunbar. Suffering from painful diabetes, Dunbar accidentally discovered the alleged "healing effects" of the local spring water. Ending the search for a cure for his illness, he spent the last ten years of his life believing and promoting that Waukesha spring water could indeed cure certain sicknesses. About 1916, the resort days of Waukesha faded and gave way to what is now a thriving city of more than 61,000 residents representing diversified industry, educational institutions, strong health care facilities, attractive and friendly residential areas and a qualified and experienced hospitality industry. While visiting Waukesha, you can catch glimpses of our bygone era in the many parks, museums and carefully restored architecture of the downtown district. | Demographic and Housing Market Data for Waukesha, WI | | Census Data | Waukesha | Waukesha County | Wisconsin | | | Population | 88,874 | 364,304 | 5,313,456 | | | Area in square miles | 88 | 635 | 55,369 | | | People per sq. mi. | 1,009 | 573 | 96 | | | Median Age | 35 | 38 | 38 | | | Median Family Income | $63,999 | $70,390 | $47,205 | | | Civilians | 55% | 54% | 51% | | | Armed Forces | 0% | 0% | 0% | | | Not in Labor Force | 20% | 21% | 24% | | | Education Levels | Waukesha | Waukesha County | Wisconsin | | | K-12 | 25% | 24% | 32% | | | High School Diploma | 19% | 19% | 22% | | | College Graduate | 14% | 16% | 10% | | | Post Graduate | 5% | 5% | 4% | | | Real Estate Market Data | Waukesha | Waukesha County | Wisconsin | | | Total Housing Units | 19,715 | 94,838 | 1,111,657 | | | Average Home Price | $183,478 | $220,877 | $143,891 | | | Median Rental Price | $600 | $633 | $372 | | | Owner Occupied | 62% | 74% | 61% | | | Rental Units | 34% | 23% | 28% | | | Vacant Units | 4% | 4% | 10% | | | | | | |
